That again?

Yup, another one of these changing pad/diaper pouch combos. I can’t help it that everyone loves them and keeps having babies! 🙂

This one was made for my sister, who had a baby boy back in April.

I won’t bother going into the details at this point since I’ve made and posted about a number of them already!

(I still have 4 more to make: a cousin had a baby in May, my best friend had a baby in September, and both hubby and I want one for Baby D, too! — I have all the materials for each one, just never got around to making them, especially as my pregnancy progressed and we moved into our new house… I still have to set up my sewing station! So you’ll see another post on these once they’re made. Then hopefully we’ll all have a break from them! :))

The Return of the Changing Pad & Diaper Pouch…

Yup, I made another one!

A co-worker, J., is due in mid-June and we’re having a baby shower for her tomorrow at work. (there is a good chance she’ll deliver early). She’s had to work from home recently, so it’s not a surprise because we needed to make sure she could come in for it. What she doesn’t know is that I collected donations from our group at work to buy a group gift and we collected enough to get 2 items off her registry. My work BFF, C., and I went to Babies R Us on Friday after work and had a field day. We couldn’t stop cooing over the cute baby clothes. It is so easy to spend money in that store!

We determined that we think it’s all so very cute, but we’re not ready to have babies ourselves yet.

Here’s part of a conversation we had:
Me: “this makes me want to have a baby…but just to dress up”
C: “yeah, a baby we could give back”
Me: “so what we really want are dolls, right?”

Though there are tons of cute baby girl clothes, I still think baby boys clothes are the cutest (I mean, a teeny tiny “suit” or sweater with elbow patches? come on!). We each got some clothes for the baby (as separate gifts from ourselves, not the group), and I decided to also make a changing pad and diaper pouch, too. Conveniently, I had the materials I needed as I had originally purchased the stuff quite some time ago to make this for someone else, but then never did. Whoops.

I think she is going to be surprised by the gifts 🙂

Changing Pad & Diaper Pouch – Deja Vu?

I made another of the diaper pouch/changing pad combos from the craftbuds tutorial.  My sister asked if I would make one since a co-workers is expecting a baby boy.  So we went to Joann’s and she picked everything out and purchased it and then I took it home and worked on it. (I actually did it a little over a week ago).

She picked out some really cute PUL material, and, like last time, I used two different prints to have a fun “reversible” changing pad.  I used home decor weight fabric this time (as the tutorial suggested), and because I didn’t have to double up fabric, or use interfacing, it took much less time.  But I’m still not very good with the bias tape…

How cute are the little owls and monkeys?

I know the changing pad doesn’t match the diaper pouch, but I don’t think that really matters, do you?

Hopefully the mom-to-be likes it and finds it useful!  (My two cousins that I made the first two combos for love them!)

I was going to make another one for one of my sister’s friends who is also expecting (but a baby girl) and I even bought all the materials when we went to Joann’s, but I decided I want to do something else.  But I’d like to be able to use the materials I already have, if possible.  So if anyone has any ideas for cute baby gifts that use the PUL material, please share!

Changing Pad & Diaper Pouch

One of my cousins had a baby a few months ago and another is expecting any day (her due date is next Monday!).  Anyway, I was trying to figure out something I could get them for Christmas when trusty allfreesewing came to the rescue.  I decided to look up sewing patterns for babies that didn’t look/sound too hard, but that also wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg to complete.  And lo and behold, I found the Changing Pad & Diaper Pouch tutorial from craftbuds.com!

Voila!

The fabric patterns chosen for the tutorial were absolutely adorable, but I never would have thought to use them together (as you can tell in the pictures, I’m fairly new to this with the plain solid color choices).  Anyway, I printed out the instructions and went to JoAnn’s to get all the supplies I needed.

Because I used regular cotton fabric for the pouches and not the home decor weight fabric, I added Heat n’ Bond and doubled up the cotton fabric to give it more stability.  I’m very pleased with the outcome (even though it’s not perfect and I’m a stickler for details).   It was a bit tough to stitch in the thicker parts of the material, but I made it work!

I found two packs of the PUL material with really cute patterns which I used for the changing pads.  Home decor weight fabric and PUL were used to created the changing pad in the tutorial, but I put PUL on both sides so either side can be used.  The bias tape on the changing pads was kind of tough.  The tutorial says to use 1/2″ bias tape, which I bought.  But the green bias tape was harder to work with because it was single fold, so I ironed it out straight and then just folded it in half over the material.  The pink bias tape was double fold, so it was a bit easier to work with.  If I make this again in the future, I will definitely make sure to use double fold.

Monsters and dinosaurs!

Cheetahs and polka dots!

It took me a total of about 9 hours over a few days to complete both.   If I do this again, I think I’ll go for the home dec weight fabric because adding the Heat ‘n Bond and the extra layers of fabric was definitely time-consuming!

I think this is a practical but cute gift, don’t you?  I mean, who wants to lug a whole diaper bag to the restroom when she’s at a restaurant?  Just grab this little pouch and you have everything you need!

I gave these to my cousins yesterday and they loved them, so mission accomplished!

I think I’ll start making a list of what to make for people for next Christmas and work on them throughout the year… does anyone else make homemade gifts?  What do you suggest?
